Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the main branches of engineering that deals with the design, planning, construction and maintenance of all types of construction such as buildings, houses, dams, roads, bridges, expressways, tunnels, etc. Civil engineers are pioneers in all types of development activities. Therefore, it can be proudly said that civil engineers are the main force of national economic and social development, especially in the current era of rapid development. Important development works of civil engineers include high-rise buildings, Suvarnabhumi Airport, various electric train projects in Bangkok, various expressway systems, etc.

Department of Civil Engineering

Since 1960

Thonburi Technical College was established on February 4, 1960. At that time, the Department of Civil Engineering was part of the 3-year Construction Engineering Program, and the Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1962. Later, on April 24, 1971, Thonburi Technical College was upgraded to King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi (KMITL) under the University Affairs Office. The Construction Engineering Program was changed to the Department of Civil Engineering. On March 7, 1998, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi was transformed into King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), the first state university to be de-registered from a government agency to a state university under the Office of the Higher Education Commission, Ministry of Education.

With the aim of continuously developing higher education, the Department of Civil Engineering opened graduate programs to develop research and social service work to be more comprehensive. The Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering program was opened in 1977 and the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering was opened in 1998. Later in 2000, the Department of Civil Engineering opened the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering program, International Program (International and Twinning Program in Civil Engineering) to enhance English language skills alongside academics. The teaching throughout the program is in English. Students can choose to study at leading universities abroad in the last 2 years of the academic year, allowing students to experience teaching and living in a truly international atmosphere.
